The mother of two is Mexican American and is an American through nationality. From the time she was little she's been extremely keen on playing sports. Gerina started playing golf at the age of fifteen. Gerina was a graduate of Goddard High School. In high school, she won her first prize in the New Mexico state golf tournament. She was a volleyball player and participated in state championships. Her first college was in the University of Texas. During the senior period of her career she was the winner of every event in which she competed. During the undergraduate year, she received the Conference USA's player of the year as well as UTEP Female Athletic Champion of the Year.
